Chemistry builds on the science process skills introduced in Biology, emphasizing quantitative skills, good laboratory technique, common lab equipment, and careful data collection. Chemistry will provide students with the necessary background for college-level coursework, including AP Biology. Chemistry is a quantitative discipline, and good math skills (especially “number sense”) are essential.
Topics studied include measurement, the quantum mechanical model of the atom, mole calculations, the periodic law, electron configuration, bonding, molecular geometry, intermolecular forces, chemical names and formulas, writing and balancing equations, types of reactions, stoichiometry, properties of gases liquids and solids, solutions & reactions, acids and bases, the pH scale, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, oxidation-reduction reactions, and electrochemistry.
